Dear Senator/Representative [Name]:
I am writing to express my dismay towards the manner in which water is being used in our country. Unfortunately, we are dangerously close to not having enough water to meet our daily necessities. Vital aquifers such as the Ogallala and Edwards aquifers that hold ground water are being drained at too fast a rate and they are unable to be replenished, the building of dams is depleting natural ecosystems, and we are sucking natural rivers and lakes dry. If we continue down this road, we will be in big trouble very fast.
This is an issue that affects people all around our country as well as in other parts of the world, and it is imperative that action be taken immediately. There are many ways that we can begin to solve this issue. Our government needs to begin to replenish aquifers and groundwater systems, as these are places we get the majority of our water. One main way to do this is by using recycled wastewater, also called grey water, set in basins and allowing it to soak back into the ground. We need to follow the examples of countries such as Argentina and Spain, who are already taking steps to solve this water crisis we find ourselves in. These countries have installed “water saving kits” into households in order to reduce the amount of water used as well as finding eco-friendly ways of transferring drinking water to homes.
If our country begins to take steps like this to make a difference in the way we use our water it will allow future generations to build off of our actions until water conservation becomes an everyday practice.
